DAY #60 OF 365 | Thursday, February 29th, 2024

YESTERDAY’S RECAP

If you missed yesterday’s AMPLIFY DAILY, I talked about maximizing the opportunity to capture professional content…

Anytime you will be in front of the room or on-stage in any substantial way.

I call this “getting the evidence” of you having been in front of an audience, working your magic.

It took time for me to begin to authentically relate to myself as a “content creator”…

CATEGORY: Content Creation

In today’s video, I’m talking about what it takes to organically build an online audience of social media followers.

As a reluctant content creator who DOES NOT relish being the focal point of attention from thousands of randos on social media…

It has taken me years to embrace the thought of creating and publishing consistent content for a public audience.

I see now that content creation doesn’t have to be as hard as I thought it was…

What I’ve realized over the last twelve months is that creating “engaging content” is actually much easier than we realize.

We look on social media and see all the perfectly manicured content…

Perfect lighting…

Elegant visual backdrop…

Perfect sound quality…

The perfect shot with that quintessential blur in the background…

Every moment perfectly choreographed…

Camera always on, all the time, capturing every moment…

And we think that THIS is what we must aspire to create on our timelines if we’re going to get traction on social media.

Jesus, this is why most of us don’t even START trying to build a brand on social…

Because HOW EXHAUSTING is it to even try to consider all this, am I right?

In my experience, it couldn’t be further from the truth that all of this stuff is necessary…

The stuff that we think matters for content to resonate with others mostly doesn’t…like not AT ALL.

While those things may be nice cherries on top that can help your social media following grow IF you want to spend a bunch of time on that stuff…

They are absolutely not necessary to begin expanding your reach…

But four (4) specific things do matter, when it comes to capturing eyeballs and intention from an audience that resonates with you on social media…

  1. Consistency
    • Publish content daily, it doesn’t have to take more than a few minutes
  2. Engaging content that is authentically you
    • This requires some vulnerability, because everything isn’t perfect all the time
    • For some people, it’s hard to be open about that if you’re not used to showing that to people
  3. Clarity in expectation setting
    • Define what they can expect to hear about from you, and consistently share things that are clearly aligned with that
  4. Know the rules of the game
    • Each of the social platforms you use has rules and guidelines that, when you know them and follow them, will have your content naturally perform better and have more reach
    • From ideal video length, to using trending sounds in the background of your video, to having certain settings turned on or off, to when and where to put links vs when you shouldn’t try to link people to your content from one platform to another, these are all rules of the game, and you need to know the rules in order to play and win

Now for those of you who don’t listen well, yes YOU, let me further clarify what I DIDN’T say…

Now let’s not be naive…

What I said was the following absolutely, positively doesn’t matter…

  • Perfectly manicured content
  • Perfect lighting
  • Perfect visuals
  • Perfect sound

What I absolutely DID NOT say was that…

  • Content doesn’t matter…
  • Or that lighting doesn’t matter…
  • Or that visuals don’t matter…
  • Or that sound doesn’t matter…

What DOESN’T matter is having these things be PERFECTLY MANICURED before they go out to the world.

No, you’re likely not going to get anywhere publishing total trash quality content…

HOWEVER, our personal bar for where WE think it needs to be before being published…

Is generally much higher than where it actually needs to be.

How do I know whether or not the content is good enough to post and I’m overthinking it?

Simple…

Get clear on what content you’re covering, and who you intend to speak to…

I’ll share more about that in detail in another post about your social media Brand Narrative Tree…

Once you know who you’re talking to (customer avatar)…

And what topics you want to focus on consistently talking about…

Choose ONE of those topics that you know like the back of your hand (for me an example might be “sales automation“)…

Then choose ONE sub-topic inside of that topic (for me an example might be “how sales automation makes you money if you’re selling your expertise online”)…

Then identify 2-3 points that you want to cover about that sub-topic (for me an example might be “distinguishing between a sales page vs a sales funnel vs a sales system“)…

Then simply turn on your camera, put it on selfie mode, and break down those 2-3 points in 58 seconds or less…

That time makes it short form content that is easily social media shareable across TikTok, Instagram reels, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn and Twitter.

DO NOT script it. You know this stuff like the back of your hand.

Choose ONE platform. Do this 1 time per day, share it on that platform…

And keep your caption to a 1-line description of what the post covers…

Do this every day religiously for 30 days, and a few things will happen…

People will naturally start to be in your inbox about this expertise that you’re sharing that they didn’t realize you had…

And most importantly, YOU’LL begin to feel a sense of clarity and ease in what you want to talk about…

And get comfortable sharing more.

Once that happens, all the possibilities open up for ways you feel comfortable growing and sharing on social media…

And the boulder will be rolling down hill, catching momentum.

Let me know if this was helpful for you.
